In the Studio: Jeffie Brewer
As “Joy Machine” moves toward its fall publication date, artist and K.Co Press author Jeffie Brewer shares the writer’s routine that keeps everything on track — no typing expertise necessary!
“I’m so busy I just sneak in writing when I can. Also, it’s August in Texas, and any reason to avoid the outside is appreciated.
I have so much writing for proposals and general correspondence with galleries, museums, and clients. My lack of real typing skills makes all that writing hilarious. When I was in 9th grade, I sat down to take a typing class. I saw a friend walking down the hall about to come into the room. I grabbed one of the hundreds of sheets of paper, wadded it up, and launched it at him. Just at that moment, the teacher walked in and got hit right between the eyes. I was promptly kicked out of typing class on day one, so I never learned to type and still haven’t recovered.
I write at one of the desks in my studio, with a pretty comfy desk chair. It faces the wall with a giant expressive drawing I did maybe eight years ago. The desk is strewn with paint chips, art supplies scattered about, and a TV that gets turned on only when breaking news is really breaking. It’s where I do all my drawing, both traditionally and digitally.
I am 6’2”-ish and 6’ of that is my sweet tooth, so anything with sugar is a weakness. I tend to have a little tea, Coke Zero, or Evian water near me at all times.”
